Barbara Didn't Make It to Church—But She Didn't Miss the Service

For 76-year-old Barbara, Sunday mornings always started the same way. She woke up early, got dressed, and looked forward to attending church with friends she had known for years.

One Sunday morning, however, her plans changed the moment she walked into the driveway.

Her car had a flat tire.

Barbara wasn't sure what to do next. She didn't want to change the tire herself, and she didn't have anyone nearby she could call. Her daughter lived in Elgin, South Carolina, so she picked up the phone and called Faye Markos-Leach.

How Faye Markos-Leach Helped Barbara Stay Connected to Church While Waiting for AAA

Faye answered right away. After hearing about Barbara's bad start to her morning, she called AAA and gave them Barbara's address. The representative explained they were running behind and estimated it would be about two hours before a technician could arrive.

Rather than asking Barbara to wait alone, Faye got in her car and made the 20-minute drive to Barbara's home.

When she arrived, Barbara looked relieved.

Faye reassured her that AAA was on the way and everything would be taken care of soon. Barbara smiled, but she admitted she was disappointed about missing church that morning.

Church Came to Barbara

Instead of letting Barbara miss the service, Faye had another idea.

She opened her laptop, found the church's live stream, and helped Barbara settle into

her favorite chair. Within minutes, the Sunday service was playing on the screen.

Barbara sang along with the hymns, listened to the sermon, and even recognized familiar faces from the congregation.

Although she wasn't sitting in her usual pew, she still felt connected to her church family.

Turning a Delay Into an Opportunity

While Barbara enjoyed the service, Faye noticed the tablet Barbara's children had given her for Christmas sitting on a nearby table.

Barbara admitted she had never really learned how to use it.

With time to spare before AAA arrived, Faye connected the tablet to the church's live stream and showed Barbara how to find it herself. They also practiced adjusting the volume, joining the live service, and returning to the home screen.

By the time the service ended, Barbara felt much more confident using her tablet.

A short delay had turned into an opportunity to learn something new.

One More Thing Before Leaving

AAA soon arrived and replaced the flat tire.

While the technician worked outside, Faye helped Barbara create her own AAA account. Barbara had always relied on others to make those calls, but now she had her own membership and knew exactly how to request roadside assistance in the future.

Later that week, Faye called Barbara's daughter with her regular update.

When she explained everything that had happened, Barbara's daughter couldn't thank her enough.

"Knowing Mom has someone she can call for situations like this gives me tremendous peace of mind," she said. "Setting up her own AAA account was invaluable."

Helping Seniors Stay Independent

For Faye Markos-Leach, helping seniors isn't always about solving major problems. Sometimes it's about being there when an unexpected challenge interrupts an ordinary day.

A flat tire could have meant a stressful morning and a missed church service. Instead, Barbara received the help she needed, learned how to use technology with more confidence, and gained an important resource for the future.

That's what HeyFaye is all about—helping seniors remain independent while giving out-of-state families peace of mind that someone they trust is nearby when they can't be.

Preparing Margaret for Hurricane Milton

For 82-year-old Margaret, hurricane season had always been part of life in Florida. For years, she handled the preparations herself. She bought bottled water, stocked the pantry, and hoped every storm would change course. She became an expert in elderly hurricane preparedness.

As time passed, those simple tasks became more difficult. Carrying heavy cases of water was exhausting. Moving patio furniture increased the risk of a fall. Long lines at stores were no longer practical. Her daughter, who lived in Ohio, wanted to help, but there was only so much she could do from nearly 1,000 miles away.

When Hurricane Milton began tracking toward Northeast Florida, Margaret’s daughter called HeyFaye.

A Plan Before the Storm

When Faye Markos-Leach arrived, Margaret already had a handwritten checklist on the kitchen table. Together, they reviewed everything that needed attention before the storm arrived.

They started outside. Faye secured potted plants, patio furniture, and outdoor décor. She made sure loose items would not become dangerous in high winds.

Next, they headed to the grocery store. They picked up bottled water, shelf-stable food, and other essentials before the crowds grew. They also stopped at the pharmacy so Margaret could refill her prescriptions before the storm.

Preparing for the Unexpected

Back at home, Faye checked every flashlight and replaced weak batteries. Together, they organized emergency supplies so everything would be easy to find if the power went out.

Faye also helped prepare Margaret’s generator. She confirmed it had fuel and was ready if electricity was interrupted.

Before leaving, Faye photographed the outside of Margaret’s home. She sent the pictures directly to Margaret’s daughter, along with a message explaining everything they had completed.

That simple update gave Margaret’s daughter something she hadn’t felt in days—peace of mind.

Checking In After Milton

A few days later, Faye returned after local officials declared it safe to travel.

Fortunately, Margaret’s home suffered only minor debris in the yard. Faye took another set of photos so Margaret’s daughter could compare the property’s condition before and after the storm.

She helped return the patio furniture and plants to their proper places. She also checked the refrigerator after the brief power outage and picked up a few groceries Margaret needed.

Later that evening, Margaret’s daughter called Faye.

“I spent the last few days worrying about Mom,” she said. “Knowing you were there meant I didn’t have to wonder whether she had everything she needed or whether she was facing this alone.”

Peace of Mind Beyond Hurricane Season

For Faye Markos-Leach, hurricane preparedness is about much more than checking supplies off a list. It’s about helping seniors remain safe, comfortable, and independent in their own homes.

For families living hundreds or even thousands of miles away, it also means knowing someone they trust is nearby when they can’t be.

That’s what HeyFaye is all about.

Helping Seniors Navigate Unexpected Home Repairs

When something breaks, it’s comforting to know someone is there to help.

Homeownership comes with its share of surprises.

A leaking water heater, a broken garage door, or an air conditioner that suddenly stops working can be frustrating for anyone. For many seniors, these situations can quickly become overwhelming—especially when they don’t know who to call or aren’t comfortable coordinating repairs on their own.

Recently, I received a call from one of my clients after their air conditioner stopped cooling on a hot Florida afternoon.

While they were understandably worried, they didn’t have to face the situation alone.

After helping them contact a trusted local HVAC company, I stayed with them while we waited for the technician to arrive. When the repair specialist got there, I helped explain the situation, listened as he described the problem, and made sure my clients understood what needed to be repaired before any work began.

Sometimes, simply having another set of ears can make all the difference.

After the repair was completed and the cool air was flowing again, I called their son, who lives several states away, to let him know everything had been taken care of.

He didn’t need to spend the afternoon wondering if his parents were sitting in a hot house or trying to coordinate repairs from hundreds of miles away.

He knew someone local had been there.

That’s what this service is really about.

I’m not the electrician, plumber, or HVAC technician. My role is to help seniors coordinate trusted local services, ask questions when needed, and make sure they never feel like they’re facing unexpected situations alone.

For families living out of state, knowing there’s someone nearby who can step in during moments like these can provide tremendous reassurance.

Sometimes the greatest comfort isn’t knowing how to fix the problem.

It’s knowing someone you trust is there to help manage it.

Helping Seniors Coordinate Home Repairs in Northeast Florida

Whether it’s meeting an HVAC technician, coordinating a plumber, waiting for an appliance delivery, or helping communicate with other trusted home service providers, HeyFaye is there to make unexpected home repairs a little less stressful for seniors and the families who love them.

Because remaining independent doesn’t mean having to face every challenge alone.

Staying Connected Shouldn’t Be Complicated

Sometimes technology isn’t the problem. It just needs a little patience.

Technology has made it easier than ever to stay connected with the people we love.

Unfortunately, it has also become one of the biggest sources of frustration for many seniors.

Recently, I stopped by to help one of my clients with what seemed like a simple request.

“I don’t know what I did,” she laughed as she pointed to her laptop. “It just isn’t working.”

Within a few minutes, we discovered the issue wasn’t complicated at all. An update had changed a few settings, and she wasn’t sure how to get back to where she had been before.

We spent a little time adjusting a few things, writing down simple instructions she could keep next to the computer, and practicing together until she felt comfortable doing it herself.

Then she smiled and asked,

“Can we try calling my granddaughter?”

A few moments later, her granddaughter appeared on the screen with an excited smile.

They talked about school, upcoming birthdays, and family plans while I quietly stepped back to let them enjoy the conversation.

That visit reminded me that helping seniors with technology isn’t really about computers.

It’s about helping grandparents see their grandchildren.

It’s about making online banking a little less intimidating.

It’s about ordering groceries when driving becomes more difficult.

It’s about reading family photos that arrive by text message instead of regular mail.

Most of all, it’s about helping seniors remain confident and connected in a world that seems to change a little faster every year.

For adult children living out of state, knowing someone local can stop by to patiently explain a new phone, reconnect a printer, set up FaceTime, or help recover a forgotten password provides more than convenience.

It helps preserve independence.

Sometimes all it takes is a little guidance from someone who understands that technology isn’t always easy—but learning something new is always possible.

Sometimes the most important thing I do is make one simple phone call.

One of the greatest challenges adult children face when living out of state isn’t always knowing when something is wrong.

It’s wondering if everything is okay.

Did Mom remember her doctor’s appointment?

Is Dad feeling better today?

Did someone finally look at the leaking faucet?

Those unanswered questions can quietly create stress that follows families throughout the day.

Recently, I stopped by to visit one of my clients after a routine medical appointment. We spent a little time catching up, organized a few papers that had accumulated on the kitchen table, and made sure a prescription had been picked up before I headed home.

Nothing about the visit was unusual.

In fact, that’s exactly what made it so important.

Before leaving, I called the client’s daughter, who lives several states away, just to let her know everything had gone well.

“Your mom’s doing great,” I told her. “She’s resting now, her prescription has been picked up, and we even had time to sit and talk over a cup of coffee.”

There was a brief pause.

Then she quietly said,

“Thank you. I didn’t realize how much I needed to hear that today.”

That conversation lasted less than five minutes.

But it changed the rest of her day.

While my client enjoyed knowing someone was nearby to help with the little things, her daughter could return to work knowing her mom was safe, cared for, and not facing life’s daily challenges alone.

Sometimes that’s all peace of mind really is.

Not solving a crisis.

Simply knowing someone you trust was there when you couldn’t be.

Helping Families Stay Connected

At HeyFaye, regular updates are an important part of every visit. Whether it’s a quick phone call, text message, or email, I want families to know how their loved one is doing—even when everything is perfectly ordinary.

Because sometimes hearing, “Everything’s okay today,” is the best news of all.

Need someone local to check in on a loved one?

If your parent lives in St. Augustine, Palm Coast, Flagler Beach, Bunnell, Ormond Beach, or Daytona Beach, HeyFaye provides friendly visits, transportation, appointment assistance, and regular family updates so you can feel connected, even when you’re hundreds of miles away.
