Sometimes the most important thing I do is make one simple phone call.
One of the greatest challenges adult children face when living out of state isn’t always knowing when something is wrong.
It’s wondering if everything is okay.
Did Mom remember her doctor’s appointment?
Is Dad feeling better today?
Did someone finally look at the leaking faucet?
Those unanswered questions can quietly create stress that follows families throughout the day.
Recently, I stopped by to visit one of my clients after a routine medical appointment. We spent a little time catching up, organized a few papers that had accumulated on the kitchen table, and made sure a prescription had been picked up before I headed home.
Nothing about the visit was unusual.
In fact, that’s exactly what made it so important.
Before leaving, I called the client’s daughter, who lives several states away, just to let her know everything had gone well.
“Your mom’s doing great,” I told her. “She’s resting now, her prescription has been picked up, and we even had time to sit and talk over a cup of coffee.”
There was a brief pause.
Then she quietly said,
“Thank you. I didn’t realize how much I needed to hear that today.”
That conversation lasted less than five minutes.
But it changed the rest of her day.
While my client enjoyed knowing someone was nearby to help with the little things, her daughter could return to work knowing her mom was safe, cared for, and not facing life’s daily challenges alone.
Sometimes that’s all peace of mind really is.
Not solving a crisis.
Simply knowing someone you trust was there when you couldn’t be.
